5-MeO-DMT (“Toad”)
What is 5-MeO-DMT?
5-MeO-DMT (5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine) is a psychedelic of the tryptamine class and a naturally occurring neurotransmitter found in the brains of all mammals. It can be extracted from numerous plant species or produced synthetically. The plant extracts are used by various central and South American indigenous tribes as a snuff. It also exists within the bufotoxin of the Sonoran Desert a.k.a. Colorado River toad (Bufo Alvarius or Ancillius Alvarius).
Synthetic 5-MeO can range in consistency from crystalline to talc-like powder and is usually white to beige in color. It can also range in purity and can be obtained in both HCL and freebase forms. The bufotoxin is generally crystalline, flake-like and clear to golden brown in color but may also contain other organic compounds or adulterants resulting from the collection or “milking” of the toad.
The 5-MeO-DMT experience is unique and cannot be compared with any other drug. No prior psychedelic experience can prepare someone for its effects, including experience with N,N-DMT (a.k.a. “DMT” or “Deems”). It is one of the few substances rates as +4 on the Shuglin rating scale and has often been referred to as “the crown jewel of entheogens” and “the God molecule.’
How is 5-MeO-DMT used?
Most people inhale the freebase form of 5-MeO-DMT from a heated glass pipe or vape pen. It can also be mixed with mullein, mint or cannabis and smoked. The HCL form, although rarer, can be insufflated (snorted). 5-MeO-DMT is generally never taken orally or injected.
WARNING! 5-MeO-DMT should never be combined with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI’s) such as harmine or harmaline, found in Ayahuasca or in plants such as Syrian rue. It should also never be ingested while taking any antidepressant medication, including SSRI’s (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc.) or MAOI antidepressants. The combination can cause serious adverse reactions including death.
What are the effects of 5-MeO-DMT?
When vaporized or smoked 5-MeO-DMT has a rapid and immediate onset. The experience is overwhelming and often results in complete ego dissolution. Some describe it as a merging with the infinite, an explosion (or implosion) of consciousness that connects them with eternal Love or the Divine. Many report powerful states of ecstatic union, oceanic bliss, “Kundalini activation,” “Samadhi” or full immersion into the “mysterium tremendum.”
Others may feel as if they are physically dying, or they may be overcome by extreme fear or terror and attempt to resist the experience. Set and setting can greatly influence whether one has a positive or challenging experience. A guide or sitter is important.
5-MeO can both increase and decrease heart rate and blood pressure depending on the individual. A health screening is recommended by many in advance to be sure that prospective participants are in solid physical and mental health before partaking.
What is the dosage of 5-MeO-DMT?
Light (i.e., threshold) doses of 5-MeO-DMT range from 1-5 mg of synthetic or clean extracts. A significant “moderate” dose can range from 6-12 mg. Higher doses range from 13-20+ mg. Bufotoxin requires an even higher dose due to the lower volume of 5-MeO-DMT it contains (about 15% by volume). A moderate to heavy dose of bufotoxin is considered to be somewhere in the 60-100 mg range. Note that bufotoxin also contains up to 80% bufotenine (5-HO-DMT) along with a wide array of other unknown and unstudied organic alkaloids.
Individuals differ in their natural tolerance to tryptamines. It is always best, therefore, to start with a lower dose to determine your individual tolerance level. The effects of 5-MeO-DMT are cumulative and immediate follow-up doses can be taken by generally reducing each subsequent dose by 1/3 until the maximum “full release” effect is achieved. (Rarely is more than one “full release” dose required or desired.)
Be careful!
5-MeO-DMT can induce challenging effects and aftereffects in some individuals, including spontaneous “reactivations” of the experience. This may be due to the endogenous presence and release of melatonin or trace amounts of 5-MeO-DMT in the human body.
In certain circumstances 5-MeO can result in significant psychological distress, particularly if used carelessly or in an unsafe environment. It is very important to have a sober “sitter” with you, or a highly skilled practitioner or guide who is familiar with the substance and how to effectively care for someone undergoing its profound effects.
The casual use of 5-MeO-DMT has led to several preventable deaths, usually from people asphyxiating on vomit when using alone.
Combining 5-MeO-DMT with other drugs, particularly stimulants, has reulted in deaths as well. Even on its own 5-MeO-DMT (and particularly the bufotoxin) has occasionally caused seizures in some people.
Be self aware! If you choose to use 5-MeO-DMT, having an intention can help you get more out of the experience.
